I like to think of that weekend as the turning point—the fulcrum, if we were still in ninth-grade physics—when we changed from being nobodies to somebodies.

Even though Neerja didn’t get the part she wanted in the play and Will stood me up for the Boston tour and, weirdly, insisted on completely avoiding me in school, our lives suddenly got super-intense.

For one thing, there was the campaign. Turned out jelly beans hadn’t been the only reason Bea and Neerja went to Hidden Sweets. They’d also ordered a bunch of watermelon-flavored Pop Rocks, made up tags that read GIGI ROCKS!, attached the tags to the packets of candy, and brought them to school, presenting them to me as a surprise. I was so touched, I was almost speechless.

“Who could forget you after these?” Neerja said, ripping open a packet with her teeth and unscrewing a Coke.

“Don’t!” I yelled, since everyone knew that soda + Pop Rocks = exploded head.

“Stand back.” She took a swallow and squeezed her eyes shut. We could hear the Pop Rocks crackling in her mouth, even with it closed. Bea bit a nail, worried, while I took out my phone ready to dial 9-1-1.

Finally, she opened her eyes and then her mouth and produced a burp loud enough to set off the fire alarms.

“Wow,” Bea said, grinning. “That was awesome.”

That’s when I decided Bea and Neerja were right—Pop Rocks were the must-have campaign party favors in addition to our hot-pink stickers that said:
